Services Offered by Dr. Knieff
Naturopathic Medicine is a philosophy of medicine where “First Do No Harm” is one of the leading principles of practice. It is a primary care approach that emphasizes treatment plans that start with the least invasive therapies first. Dr. Knieff works closely with patients to develop treatment plans together, often working on the acute presentation of the issue as well as the underlying cause together. She offers preventative services and wellness exams as well as specialty consults around specific conditions. Although Dr. Knieff manages prescription medication and other supplements, she has a strong philosophy in food as medicine and sustainable lifestyle modification. She uses nutritional therapies, tailored herbalism, and exercise science in her practice. She also includes physical medicine such as naturopathic manipulation, visceral manipulation, hydrotherapy, low level laser therapy, and Kinesio taping as part of her naturopathic practice.
Acupuncture and other Chinese Therapies
Acupuncture is a centuries-old therapy that involves the use of very thin needles to access and regulate the meridians of the body. Acupuncture can be helpful not only for physical aches and pain, but also possesses immense utility in aiding emotional pain and stresses as well as easing side effects of medication tapering. Dr. Knieff practices acupuncture in the context of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which means that, if indicated, a given session of acupuncture may also involve Traditional Chinese therapies such as moxa (burned mugwort), fire cupping, gua sha (scraping massage), and tui na (traditional Chinese massage).
Dr. Knieff is trained extensively in both Western and Eastern herbal medicine. She is a Registered Herbalist of the American Herbalist Guild and uses anywhere from prescription-only herbs to food herbs as part of her practice. She formulates herbs tailored to each and every patient and is familiar with prescribing herbs in the form of food recipes, tinctures, syrups, granules, raw herbs, and capsules and tablets. Biofeedback is a form of therapy that falls under the umbrella of MindBody Medicine. In its narrowest definition, biofeedback is where electronic monitoring of automatic body functions are used to train an individual to gain voluntary control of that function. Functions that are monitored include breath rate, heart rate variability, skin temperature, and skin conductance. Dr. Knieff practices Biofeedback from a mindfulness perspective, where the monitoring of body functions is used to create awareness of emotional states and automatic thought processes that are deeply ingrained. Through training of awareness and of regulating physiologic functions, biofeedback can create space not only around anxiety and depression but can also change one’s relationship with chronic physical pain.
Dr. Knieff practices a wide variety of bodywork modalities including Bowenwork and Tensegrity Medicine, Visceral and Neural Manipulation, and Craniosacral Therapy. Most of these therapies are fairly gentle and focus on balancing the fascial planes of the body in order to restore functioning and alleviate pain. Oftentimes deeply seated emotions trapped in body tissues can be released gently and effectively through subtle bodywork. Dr. Knieff often pairs bodywork with breathwork training to further unleash old tensions and increase functionality.
